Starting Date: December 1999
Duration: 18 months

The project finished in 2001

Aims

The Lands of Sea transnational project was aimed to design and validate appropriate strategies concerning self-employment and other conversion programmes in favour of exceeding fishery-related manpower, for structural reasons, at areas depending on fisheries.

The areas dependant on fisheries that were identified by the project were:

- Portugal: Setubal Region
- Italy: Marche Region
- Ireland: Galway County
- Spain: Andulucia Region

The project was carried out in various stages, using a model building methodology; starting with the assessment of existing problems and the identification of commonly recognised patterns. Several conversion strategies were determined and evaluated in order to select a limited number of options believed to be the best feasible options. Reference Manuals were devised and distributed to all concerned parties. In each of the partnership countries/regions a workshop was organised which enabled the partners to present and discuss the findings and conclusions resulting from the project activities and to encourage the actual starting-up of conversion programmes.
