European Training in Aquaculture Management

ENSEMA provided a one year vocational management training course in the following competencies:

  • Production and processing
  • Quality
  • Marketing
  • Resource Management
  • Business Management
  • Problem solving

The ENSEMA project was specifically aimed at those with prior aquaculture experience who are already working at levels ranging from assistants to directors. The participants had a post 'A' level degree in aquaculture/ agriculture with at least one years' experience within an aquaculture company, or instead had been working on a farm for some years.

A survey of managing directors from large aquaculture companies in France, Italy and Greece was completed. Farms surveyed included fresh water, marine farms, mussel, oyster and pond farms. The objective of the survey was to respond to the current training/ skills needs in European aquaculture.

The training course which was developed in response to the survey, consisted of the following:

  • 5 months at the School of Agriculture of Poisy - France
  • 2 months at the University of Potenza-Italy
  • 6 months training period in a foreign company
Sample profiles of those eligible to apply for the course included:
  • An Honours degree in aquaculture or in a technical training plus a year of experience on an aquaculture farm
  • Any person who is working on an aquaculture farm (for several years at least) and wishes to get promoted
