AquaTT appointed as Co-Facilitator of EATP's Knowledge Management Thematic Area

April 2008

The Board of Directors of the EATP (European Aquaculture Technology Platform), after receiving about 50 proposals, has appointed all Chairs and Facilitators for the 7 Thematic Areas. David Murphy, Manager of AquaTT, has been appointed facilitator of the Knowledge Management Thematic Area, together with Karl Almås, President of SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture. Chair of this group will be Luc Grisec, Director of AAH R&D, Intervet.

Other Thematic Areas within the EATP are 1). Product quality & human safety and health; 2). Technology and systems; 3). Managing the biological life cycle; 4). Sustainable feed production; 5). Integration with the environment; 6). Aquatic animal health and welfare

EATP’s chairman, Gustavo Larrazábal, said in this connection: “In my view this is a strong and balanced group of very competent people and I am looking forward to cooperate with them in upholding the European aquaculture sector as the most competitive an innovative in the world, producing good products for the consumers, and creating wealth and jobs in our costal zones.”

AQUA-TNET Annual Event 2007

Date: 14-15 June 2007
Venue: Hellenic Centre of Marine Research, Crete (Greece)

AQUA-TNET was created by AquaTT in 1996 and in 2005 it expanded to become the largest multidisciplinary European Education Network in the field of aquaculture, fisheries and aquatic resources management with 120 partners in 28 European countries.  AQUA-TNET is a co-operation between departments of higher education institutions and other partners such as academic organisations, research institutions and industry, aiming to enhance quality and to define and develop a European dimension within aquaculture and related domains. AQUA-TNET is coordinated by Ghent University (Belgium) and co-managed and serviced by AquaTT

The AQUA-TNET Annual Event 2007 event involved workshops and presentations of all 9 Work Packages, plenary meetings, and stakeholder (representatives, research organisations, NGOs, SMEs, students, wider public) presentations on perceived needs from training providers, followed by discussions. Vertical work package workshops were held with multi-stakeholder involvement to ensure implementation of the vertical objectives. Decision makers had the opportunity to express industry practices and needs to the academic community, yielding business-driven solutions.

Workshop: Carrying Capacity Tools, Results and User Perspectives

Date
: Wednesday, July 11th 2007, 9.30am – 3.30pm
Venue: Geological Survey of Ireland, Haddington Road, Dublin 4, Ireland

Please CLICK HERE for the press article of the Carrying Capacity Workshop.

This workshop was organised by Aqua TT on behalf of Clew Bay Marine Forum, South East Shellfish Co-op & La Tene Maps, and sponsored by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and the Marine Institute and members of the EU funded Keyzones Project.

This one day Workshop was a follow on from the successful one day Conference held in Westport, Co. Mayo last September. This workshop assumed participants have no prior knowledge about carrying capacity, which may be defined as the ability to maintain animal and plant life within a discrete area in such a way that the ecosystem remains in equilibrium. Applied to aquaculture, it is about the ability of a particular area to support shellfish and/or finfish production in a sustainable way.

Participation was open to anyone who is interested in the coastal zone and wants to find out more about carrying capacity studies, single bay management or an ecosystem approach to bay management. Audiences included users of the marine, such as fishermen, aquaculturists, and those involved in environmental & water monitoring, and coastal zone modelling & planning.

The conference was particularly relevant, in light of the State now planning and implementing carrying capacity studies for most of the major bays in the country. Similar studies are currently underway in bays in Ireland North and South and several are completed or nearing completion.
