Background:

The PESCALEX project's main aim is to create content and language integrated learning (CLIL) courses in fish health/fish diseases in order to benefit those areas of Europe where the aquaculture industry is vital to the economy. It is hoped that this methodology will enable users to both teach and learn vocationally-oriented material through the medium of a foreign language.

Expected Outcomes:

A virtual learning environment will be constructed with:

  • 4 multi-lingual modules in 6 languages (EL, EN, ES, FR, NO, PL). These will form part of a blended learning framework (tutor-led with online ODL materials).
  • 4 course modules: Quality Assurance for Fish Health Management, Basic techniques in Fish Haematology, Cost-effective Feeding for Fish, Fish Diseases. The last module is completely new and work has already begun on developing this course in the required basic language structures. The first three exist in English, Norwegian and Greek and will have to be translated into French, Spanish and Polish. On its completion, the Fish Diseases module will also be translated into the above languages.
  • A collection of specific scientific terminology concerning fish health/diseases in English, French, Greek, Spanish, Norwegian and Polish.
  • Existing basic level language learning modules, which will be used to support the delivery of the CLIL materials (English, French, Spanish, Norwegian, Polish, Greek, Portuguese and Swedish).

There will be a Final Workshop where the deliverables will be demonstrated to a wide audience of interested users, probably in France in June/July 2007.
