AQUAEXCEL2020 Ninth Call for Access

AQUAEXCEL2020 COL

The AQUAEXCEL2020 project unites major aquaculture experimental facilities with capacity to undertake experimental trials on a selection of commercially important fish aquaculture species and system types. These installations are made available to the research community for Transnational Access (TNA) with the support of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. Transnational Access involves a research group in one country collaborating with one or more AQUAEXCEL2020 Infrastructures that are located in a different country to the applicant, and which offer facilities and expertise not available in their own country.

Interested researchers can propose projects that involve visits of one or in some cases two people to the chosen research infrastructure for periods of up to three months. Access to the research infrastructures and associated travel and subsistence expenses will be paid for under the project. The establishment of new transnational collaborations is strongly encouraged, as well as the participation of SMEs.

Priority will be given to projects addressing one of the following identified research priorities: sustainable fish feeds, remote monitoring in real-time, selective breeding and reproduction ensuring all year-round production.

Applications must be prepared and submitted via the TNA online application system. Each person involved in the application must first create an individual username to access the system. Further guidance on using the system is provided on the website.

EuroMarine Young Scientist Working Group Now Open

The EuroMarine Young Scientist Working Group (YSWG) is currently open for applications. Eligible students who are interested should submit a short letter of application (including some detail on their vision and contribution to the working group) to the GA representative of their Member Organisation, who will forward their chosen candidate to comm@euromarinenetwork.eu by the application deadline. The Working Group is available to both full or invited members of EuroMarine, and only one candidate per organisation will be accepted. The timeframe for the Working Group is from January 2018 – January 2019 and is open to PhD students or individuals in their first postdoctorate contract. The WG participants will be selected from these candidates, with all applicants becoming part of the wider contributing group.

EURASTiP Exchange Programme Launched

The EURASTiP project has recently launched its Exchange Programme. The programme is open to individuals involved in industry, researchers and educators from both Europe and Asia. The value of the Programme is up to €3,000 for successful applicants.

The EURASTiP project is a Horizon 2020-funded project, which began in January 2017. The project aims to create and support three National Pilot multi-stakeholder Platforms (NPPs) in major aquaculture producing countries (Thailand, Vietnam and Bangladesh) and develop roadmap models for others in the region, providing the foundation for an international multi-stakeholder platform (MSP).

Highly Anticipated COLUMBUS Final Conference Delivers – Making Marine and Maritime Research Count

On 24 January 2018, more than 70 participants met in Brussels, Belgium, for the COLUMBUS project’s third and final Annual Blue Society Knowledge Transfer Conference. The COLUMBUS conference, entitled “Making Marine and Maritime Science Count”, provided a forum to collaboratively explore the barriers, challenges and possible solutions to increasing the impact potential of marine and maritime research.

The conference was opened by David Murphy of AquaTT, the COLUMBUS Strategic and Operational Leader. Surprise guest Ricardo Serrão Santos (MEP) – a long-time supporter and member of the COLUMBUS External Advisory Board – gave the first welcome address. The COLUMBUS European Commission policy officer, Marco Weydert, also welcomed the participants and discussed the European Commission’s move towards “reviewing portfolios of projects rather than focusing only on their outputs individually.”

The day commenced with an overview of the project’s achievements through a panel discussion. Facilitated by Alistair Lane of the European Aquaculture Society (EAS), partners involved in the COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer journey shared their experiences, insights and reflections. Following this, a second panel of industry representatives were invited to explore synergies, commonalities and differences in their approaches to value creation from research investments.

The attendees enjoyed talking about the challenges and barriers involved in three key stages of the research lifecycle: pre-project, project implementation and post-project. Finally, a panel comprised of experts from the policy-facing research management sector discussed what strategic actions need to be taken to further optimise the research system and ultimately increase the impact of marine and maritime research.

A compilation of COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer stories was provided to all those in attendance, along with 48 examples made available for download. More than 50 stories will be finalised and uploaded to the COLUMBUS website at the end of the project (28 February 2018). Due to the success of the project, COLUMBUS aims to ensure a strong legacy. It will concentrate on defining recommendations and guidelines for how Knowledge Transfer could be incorporated into funded research as a key output of the project. DEVOTES Project Wins COLUMBUS Blue Society Knowledge Transfer Award

The DEVOTES project, which ran from 2012 to 2016, won the COLUMBUS Blue Society Knowledge Transfer award at the third and final edition of the conference.

The call for nominations ran from 3 October 2017 to 19 January 2018. Five projects from the fifty applications were shortlisted by a select evaluation committee of members from the COLUMBUS Management Team. The nominations were scored against the following criteria: Innovative: developing new concepts, processes, tools, methodologies and/or technology; Tailored: targeting specific audiences; Integrated: accessing the entire research project lifecycle; Impactful: creating measurable uptake and application; Leadership and Community Empowerment: inspiring change; Responsible: complying with the RRI principles; and, Legacy: achieving impact beyond the project lifetime.

Four of those short-listed have been granted merit for their activities:

• Nuno Mendonça: for the Figueira da Foz Business Incubator (www.ieff.pt), due to its efforts to accelerate business within the marine and maritime sector.

• Leopoldo Cavalteri Gerhardinger: for the Painel Mar (doi: 10.13140/RG.2.2.16119.01449), the Brazilian Future Earth Panel, due to its efforts to act as a multisectoral collaborative platform on the interface of knowledge and decision-making processes, aiming at the qualification of policies for the sustainable use and health of the oceans.

• Justine Delettre: for the Mr. Goodfish programme (www.mrgoodfish.com), due to its efforts to raise awareness of sustainable consumption of seafood products by the general public and industry professionals.

• Gabriele Sacchettini: for the OpenTEA (www.opentea.eu), due to its efforts to develop a new on-line training tool relating to the real-time monitoring of sea contaminants using the outputs of the SEA-on-a-CHIP project.

“I am very grateful that our activity had been recognised”, said Borja. “COLUMBUS is a great initiative and awards like this will help incentivise researchers and their organisations to ensure that their research gets used by those who need it”.

Borja will present the DEVOTES project at the COLUMBUS Parliamentary Event, ‘Accelerating Blue Growth through Marine and Maritime Knowledge Transfer’ on 22 February 2018 in Brussels, Belgium (http://www.columbusproject.eu/2015-05-13-10-11-46/events-all).  During this event, COLUMBUS will present its lessons learned and will underline the advantages of a more proactive approach for Knowledge Transfer, supported by the appropriate resources throughout the process from funding.

Seas of plastic, declining fish stocks and ocean acidification are just some examples of the damage caused to the ocean by our everyday activities, which can also have a profound effect on our health and wellbeing.

The ‘Love the Ocean’ campaign aims to rebalance our relationship with the ocean and show our appreciation by committing to take real action each day, sharing our pledges and actions online, and tagging them with #LovetheOcean.

‘Love the Ocean’ coincides with the final conference of the EU Horizon 2020 funded Sea Change project on 15 February 2018 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, concluding three years of empowering and educating citizens to take action for our ocean. The conference will focus on the project’s achievements and plan for the coming years, maintaining the momentum of Ocean Literacy by linking with initiatives worldwide for the upcoming Decade of Ocean Science (2021 – 2030).

Open Call: Training Through Research Surveys (TTRS) Scheme 2018

Training Through Research Surveys (TTRS) is a collaboration with the Marine Institute that increases national capacity in offshore marine research by offering placements on a range of research surveys on-board the national research vessels, RV Celtic Explorer and RV Celtic Voyager. On-board placements provide the experience and skills required to work at sea and facilitate career development in ocean science. Participation also serves as a valuable opportunity to network with leading Irish and European marine scientists.  Applications are invited from graduate and postgraduate students from across the island of Ireland and can be submitted via the online application form.

Requirements
• Applicants must hold a degree in marine-related science or technology or be in the final year of their undergraduate programme.
• Participants must hold a valid ENG11 medical certificate and a Personal Survival Techniques (PST) certificate (STCW95).
• Applicants should have some prior sea going experience.

PhD Grant SEAFOODTOMORROW: Development of (genetic) molecular methods to detect food fraud and food integrity

This PhD grant is situated within the project SEAFOODTOMORROW, a multi-disciplinary EU Horizon 2020 project with 35 international partners. It offers the selected PhD candidate the chance to become an expert in food fraud detection and food integrity with respect to different marine (seafood) species, from basic scientific developments to real market applications.

As a Phd researcher, your tasks within this EU project involve:
• Setting up methods for marine species identification based on genetic (and potentially other) molecular technologies
• Setting up a reference DNA database for the EU list of seafood species
• Setting up (molecular) methods for the quantification and identication of species in complex (food)matrices
• Developing fast and advanced technologies to perform species identification

Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of marine biotech and food science, knowledge of molecular methods, and good communication skills. A strong command of the English language is also expected.

Applications are now open for the IMBeR ClimEco6 Summer School!

Applications for the IMBeR ClimEco6 Summer School are now open. The summer school aims to contribute to the development of the next generation of interdisciplinary marine researchers. Participants will develop a strong theoretical and applied understanding of many disciplines, thanks to a wide number of lecturers with expertise in multiple fields being present. Fish Immunology Workshop

The Wageningen fish immunology/vaccination workshops have been organised annually since 1998. The workshops are characterised by one-hour presentations, which consist of a thorough introduction to each subject. Fish Immunology is the subject of the 2018 edition.

Three temporary postdoctoral positions available

The Marine Institute is currently advertising for three part-time postdoctoral positions in Galway. The three contracts are temporary and are for periods of 24, 33 and 47 months.

The successful candidates will work within the Oceanographic Services team as Postdoctoral Researchers, with the main responsibility for delivering modelling products and services under the following projects:TAPAS, iFADO, MyCOAST and CleanAtlantic.
